Center Scientifique de Monaco: an institution dedicated to scientific research and innovation
Founded in 1960 by Prince Rainier III, the Centre Scientifique de Monaco (CSM) is an autonomous public institution playing a key role in the Monegasque and international scientific landscape. Under the supervision of the Government of Monaco's Department of the Interior, the CSM is dedicated to fundamental and applied research in a number of strategic fields, principally marine biology, polar biology and medical biology.
In the field of marine biology, the Centre Scientifique de Monaco has gained worldwide renown for its in-depth research into corals and marine ecosystems. Since 1990, it has been studying the effects of climate change and ocean acidification on these fragile ecosystems. The laboratory boasts one of the world's oldest collections of coral cultures, providing a valuable basis for environmental research.
Since 2011, the CSM polar biology department has been studying the mechanisms by which sub-Antarctic species adapt to climate change, with a particular focus on penguins and their environment. This scientific expertise contributes to a better understanding of climate-related global ecological impacts.
Medical biology, set up in 2013, is another major branch of the institution, focusing in particular on research into immunology, pediatric oncology and the complex interactions between health and the environment. Here, the Centre Scientifique de Monaco develops translational projects, combining basic research with practical applications in human health.
In addition, the CSM maintains close scientific collaborations with renowned institutes and universities at both European and international level, contributing to its scientific reputation. It promotes its discoveries through patents, scientific publications and support for innovative start-ups.
As a benchmark institution, the Centre Scientifique de Monaco embodies the values of excellence, cooperation and innovation. It also plays an essential advisory role to the Monegasque authorities on environmental and health issues, reinforcing the Principality's commitment to sustainable development and scientific progress.
